New Feature: Sharing Tabs

From now you can make any of your tabs public and share them with your friends and coworkers. You can even make web directories from your favorite links.
Making a tab public means anyone (even if somebody doesn't have a Bookmark Ninja account) can access the shared tab with a link. The link has a format like this: "bookmarkninja.com/share/123456". The shared tab is read-only.

By default all the Tabs you add are private. To share a Tab follow the steps below:
  • (1) Open the Dashboard.
  • (2) Select the Tab you want to share.
  • (3) Select the "Tabs/Share Tab" menu - the Tab Sharing settings dialog will come up:

  • (4) Check or clear the options to customize the appearance of the shared Tab.
  • (5) Select the corresponding commands to copy the share link to the Clipboard, send it via email or share it on Facebook or Twitter.
  • (6) Click on the "Share Tab" button. Now the Tab is shared and the share icon appears next to the Tab name:

After you shared a Tab you can change the sharing settings and access the share link any time by selecting the "Tabs/Sharing settings" menu. The same dialog will come up when you shared the Tab and you can update the settings. To stop sharing a tab select the "Tabs/Stop sharing Tab" menu:

To access the Tab sharing menus on mobile, first tap on "Turn On Tab and Category Editor" on the bottom of the Dashboard page. Then you can select the "Share Tab", "Sharing settings" and "Stop sharing Tab" menus:

Improvement: Bookmark Favicons on the Dashboard

Many users requested to have the favicons of the bookmarks to be displayed on the Dashboard. The small icons can help to visually find the bookmarks faster. This improvement on the Dashboard is available on both desktop and mobile devices.

If you still want to use the Dashboard without the favicons, you can turn it off on the Settings page, simply uncheck the "Show favicons of bookmarks" checkbox.

It is also recommended to turn off the display of the favicons if you have many bookmarks on a Tab and want to improve the loading speed of the Dashboard.

New Feature: Find Category and Search Bookmarks on the Dashboard

If you have many Categories it can be difficult to find the one you are looking for. The "Find Category" new feature helps you to quickly find the categories:
  1. Start typing the name of the Category in the "Find Category" text field.
  2. As you are typing (after 2 characters) a suggestion list will show up with the Categories whose names start with the characters you typed.
  3. Select the Category you are searching for (either with a mouse click or with pressing Enter).
  4. The Category's Tab will be loaded, the browser window will be scrolled to the Category, and the Category will be marked with a thin red border.

The other feature is rather an improvement. From now you can also start a bookmark search from the Dashboard not just from the My Bookmarks page. Enter any text in the "Search Bookmarks" field then press Enter. The My Bookmarks page will be loaded with the search results. It works the same when you start a search from the My Bookmarks page. It searches in the title, URL, tags and notes of the bookmarks.

The features are available on mobile, too:

Improvement: Finding Tags Quickly On The My Bookmarks Page

If you have a long tag list on the My Bookmarks page then it's not easy to find and select a tag, you have to scroll through the whole list. From now you can find a tag pretty quickly by starting typing the name of the tag in the text box just above the "Available tags" list. Tags will be filtered, only tags starting with the characters you typed will be displayed. This improvement is available on both desktop and mobile.

Improvement: Selecting A Category On The My Bookmarks Page

If you are on the Dashboard and decide to do a bulk operation on all the bookmarks of a Category (adding a tag or moving the bookmarks to the Catalog or to another Category) then you have to go to the My Bookmarks page, select the Dashboard radio button then select the Tab and Category. That's a total of 4 clicks and the page also reloads 4 times.

From now you can achieve this with 2 clicks and 1 page load. There is a new menu item "Open in My Bookmarks" under the Category menu (icon gear in the Category caption) on the Dashboard. Click on "Open in My Bookmarks" and the My Bookmarks page will be loaded with the Dashboard and the corresponding Tab and Category already selected.

New Feature: Set Tab/Category and Tags when adding a bookmark in mobile browsers

Until now you could add a bookmark to Ninja in the mobile browsers only with sending the link via email to the add@bookmarkninja.com email address.

From now you can bookmark a page the same way as in the desktop browsers: you can invoke the "Add Bookmark" dialog where you can set the destination Tab/Category and can also add Tags.

While the installation of the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet in the desktop browsers is a simple drag and drop, in the mobile browsers it requires 3 easy steps.

Please launch the www.bookmarkninja.com site in your mobile browser and select "Install Bookmarklet" from the Ninja main menu and follow the 3 steps listed on the page.

You can find a more detailed guide here: How to install the bookmarklet in the mobile browsers?

To invoke the "Add Bookmark" window to send the actual link in the mobile browser to Ninja, tap on the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet: How to add a bookmark to Ninja on mobile devices?

Of course sending the link via email to the add@bookmarkninja.com email address is also still available.

New Feature: Show Tags and Notes in Tooltip

A new feature that has been asked by quite a few users. When you hover your mouse over a bookmark the Tags and/or Notes will be showed in a tooltip:

By default this feature is turned off. You can turn it on on the Settings page. You can either turn on one of the items to be displayed or both:

Importing Pocket Bookmarks

From now you can import your Pocket bookmarks directly into Bookmark Ninja. Pocket doesn't use the standard "Netscape bookmark file format" for export, so until now users were not able to transfer their bookmarks easily from Pocket to Ninja. Since more and more users contacted me with this request I have developed the support for the Pocket file format.

Browser Extension Buttons for Ninja

If you want to use Ninja you have to install bookmarklets on your browser's bookmark bar to have the "Add to Ninja" and "Ninja Dashboard" buttons accessible.

From now another option is also available: you can install browser extension buttons in Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Extensions for the other browsers will be available in the future. Using extensions instead of bookmarklets makes possible to hide the browser's bookmark bar which saves space on the screen.

The reason why these 3 browsers were selected is that Chrome and Firefox have a 89% market share (you can check the latest browser statistics and trend here). Opera was selected because the Chrome extensions can be easily installed in Opera with one extra step.

Of course the bookmarklet installation option will be still available in any browser.

You can install the extensions from the Install Browser Buttons page.

New Feature: Find and Delete Duplicates

This is an old post. Please check the updated post about the improved version of the "Find and delete duplicates" tool here: Improved "Find and delete duplicates"

If you already have collected a large number of bookmarks, the chance is high that you have duplicated bookmarks. This new feature makes possible to find and delete the duplicates.

The feature is accessible on the My Bookmarks page (only in desktop browser, not available in mobile browser).
Make sure  "All" is selected and no tag is selected from the Available tags list. This is the default state when you click on the "My Bookmarks" menu and the page loads. The "Find Duplicates" menu will be accessible only when the these conditions are met.

Click on the "Find Duplicates" menu to bring up the "Find Duplicates" dialog.
A bookmark is considered to be duplicated if it has the same URL as another bookmark.
Enter a tag (default tag: "duplicate") that you want to add to one of each duplicate pairs.
For example if 5 bookmarks have the same URL then the tag will be added to 4 of them.
To start the search click on the "Find Duplicates" button.

When the search is complete, click on OK to close the message box then click on the "Duplicate" tag in the Available tags list to see the duplicated bookmarks.

Now select all the bookmarks (click on "Select All") and delete them (click on "Delete").
Before deleting the bookmarks always make sure that the "Duplicate" tag has been selected.

New Feature: Duplicate Bookmark

Use the Duplicate Bookmark feature if you want to access the same bookmark in different Categories. After you duplicated the bookmark move it to the desired Category.
It can be also useful if you want to create bookmarks manually by duplicating an existing bookmark and editing its url.

The feature is accessible on the Dashboard. To duplicate a bookmark, right mouse click on the bookmark and select "Duplicate" (on a mobile device tap and hold on the bookmark to active the context menu).

Emojis in the Website Titles

It's not very common, but website titles might contain emojis. Until now if you wanted to add such a webpage to Ninja, it failed, you couldn't add the link. Now it has been fixed.

Technical background

The Bookmark Ninja MySQL database is configured for UTF8 encoding, that supports a maximum of 3 bytes per character. Emojis are stored in 4 bytes. This was the problem.

An obvious fix could have been to change the encoding in the database from UTF8 to UTF8MB4, that supports a maximum of 4 bytes per character. But the performance of 4-byte UTF8MB4 is slower than for 3-byte UTF8. I didn't want to sacrifice the performance just because there are a very few websites out there with titles including emojis.
Instead I made a fix, that replaces the emojis in the title with a  character.
