Users on Mac please update the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet and browser extension

On Mac OS the Add Bookmark dialog might be displayed with incorrect height, hiding the "Not bookmarked yet" message under the buttons (when "Detect already bookmarked pages" is turned on).

This issue has been caused by the latest updates of Chrome and Safari on Mac OS. If you have this problem please update the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet and/or Chrome extension, that will re-adjust the height of the dialog.

To update the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet button:
  1. Remove the current "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet from the Safari/Chrome bookmark bar (right mouse click on the bookmarklet button then select Delete)
  2. Install the new bookmarklet (drag and drop) from this page: https://www.bookmarkninja.com/installbrowserbuttons

To update the "Add to Ninja' Chrome extension:
  1. Right mouse click on the extension and select "Manage Extensions"
  2. Turn on "Developer mode" (in the top right corner)
  3. Click on Update

New Feature: Find Category when Adding a Bookmark

When you want to bookmark a page and you have many tabs and categories it may happen that you don’t remember which tab a category is on, or you don’t remember the exact name of the category. You can only find the category by selecting the tabs in the drop down list then going through the categories of each tab, which can be painful and makes the adding bookmark process long.

This new feature makes possible not just to quickly find a category but even the Tab and Category fields will be automatically filled out which makes adding bookmarks faster.

In desktop browsers:
  • (1) Click on the “Add to Ninja” bookmarklet or browser extension button.
  • (2) Click on the magnifier icon next to Category field, the Find Category dialog will popup.
  • (3) Start typing the name of the category (if the category name contains more words, you can start typing any of the words, it will find the category).
  • (4) After typing 2 characters, you will get suggestions in a drop down list.
  • (5) Select the Tab/Category from the list you are searching for (either with a mouse click or with pressing Enter).
  • (6) The Tab and Category fields will be automatically filled out based on your selection.

In mobile browsers:
  • (1) Tap on the “Add to Ninja” bookmarklet.
  • (2) Tap on “Find Category” below the Category field, the Find Category page will show up.
  • (3) Tap on the text field and start typing the name of the category (if the category name contains more words, you can start typing any of the words, it will find the category).
  • (4) After typing 2 characters, you will get suggestions in a drop down list.
  • (5) Tap on the Tab/Category in the list you are searching for.
  • (6) The Tab and Category fields will be automatically filled out based on your selection.

New Feature: Alphabetical Sorting of Categories

This feature has been requested by many Users. The categories are sorted from top to bottom in the columns and are divided among the 3 columns in a way so that the 3 columns will have similar heights as mush as possible.

To sort the categories in desktop browsers:
  • (1) Open the Dashboard
  • (2) Select the tab where you want to sort the categories
  • (3) Select "Categories/Sort A-Z" or "Categories/Sort Z-A"

In mobile browsers:
  • (1) Open the Dashboard
  • (2) Select the tab where you want to sort the categories
  • (3) Tap on "Turn ON Tab and Category Editor" at the bottom of the page
  • (4) Tap on "Sort Categories A-Z" or "Sort Categories Z-A"

Improvement: Collapse All/Expand All Categories

From now you can collapse or expand all category groups on a tab with a single click.

In your desktop browser:
  • (1) Open the Dashboard
  • (2) Select the tab where you want to collapse/expand the categories
  • (3) Select "Categories/Collapse all" or "Categories/Expand all"

If you want to rearrange the order of your categories it can be useful to collapse them all before starting to rearrange them.

Safari Users on Mac, please update the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet

In Safari on Mac the "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet brings up the Add Bookmark dialog with an incorrect height and the buttons (Add and Cancel) are cut off. Actually you can press the buttons, it’s just a cosmetic issue, but it looks ugly. This height problem has been probably introduced by a Safari update. To fix the issue please follow the steps below:
  1. Remove the current "Add to Ninja" bookmarklet from the Safari bookmark bar (right mouse click on the bookmarklet button then select Delete)
  2. Install the new bookmarklet (drag and drop) from this page: https://www.bookmarkninja.com/installbrowserbuttons

Improvement: Users can login with their email address, too

Since the email address is a unique identifier, just like the username, from now you can login with your registered email address, too. Simply type your email address in the Username field during the login if you don't remember your username.

The reason why this improvement has been introduced is that it's very common that users try to login with their email address instead of their username, which failed until now.

New Feature: Advanced Search

Until now, when you ran a search on the My Bookmarks page, the default and only search mode was "Exact phrase".
From now you can select one of the following 3 search modes:
  • Exact phrase
  • All of the words
  • Any of the words
The default search mode still remains "Exact phrase". To run a search with any of the search modes on the My Bookmarks page, click on the blue down arrow next to the search field then select the desired search mode.

Let's suppose you enter the following text in the search field: big red apple
You will get the below search results with the different search modes:

Exact phrase: bookmarks containing exact phrases ("big red apple")

All of the words: bookmarks containing all words in any position ("big" and "red" and "apple")

Any of the words: bookmarks containing any of the words ("big" or "red" or "apple")

When you run a search, the URL, the title, the tags and the notes of the bookmarks are all searched.

When you run a quick search from the Dashboard, the "Exact phrase" search mode is used.

The new search modes are available on the mobile web UI, too:

Improvement: New Error Handling Framework

February was about developing and introducing a new error handling framework in Bookmark Ninja. This improvement is about how the application behaves when an unexpected error occurs e.g.: you try to import a bookmark file that is not in the correct format or there is a hiccup in the connection.

As part of the new error handling framework users now get more detailed messages and in most cases they can even solve the problem with a simple page reload. The logging of the unexpected errors have been also improved which helps in fixing the possible bugs and making new improvements in the future.

New Feature: Find Dead Links

With this tool you can easily clean up your bookmarks by finding and deleting dead links. A web link is considered to be "dead" if it returns error 404 (page not found) or the link contains a non-existing domain.

To run the cleanup tool please follow the steps below:
  • (1) Open the "My Bookmarks" page
  • (2) Make sure that "All" is selected (both Catalog and Dashboard bookmarks are listed)
  • (3) Click on "Find Dead Links", the "Find Dead Links" dialog will popup

  • (4) Enter a unique tag that will be added to the bookmarks that have dead links (by default the tag is "dead-link")
  • (5) Click on the "Find Dead Links" button to start the process

The process of finding dead links may take from some minutes to a few days depending on how many bookmarks you have.

After you started the process you can close the browser window and can even turn off your computer. Or you can continue using Bookmark Ninja.

You will get an email notification when "Find Dead Links" is complete. The email will contain a brief summary report: number of bookmarks checked, number of dead links found and a link to the bookmarks marked with the "dead-link" tag on the "My Bookmarks" page.

To avoid unnecessary server load you can run this tool once in every 30 days.

Make sure to also use the Find Duplicates tool in order to clean up your bookmarks.
