In addition to the most common link protocols (such as http://, https://, ftp://, ftps://, etc.), you can now add phone numbers (tel:) and email addresses (mailto:) as links.

How to Add a Phone Number or Email to the Dashboard:

(1) Open the Dashboard in Bookmark Ninja (click Dashboard in the main menu).

(2) Click the gear icon next to a category name.

(4) In the Title field, enter the name of the phone number’s or email’s owner.

(5) In the URL field, enter the phone number or email address using one of these formats:

  • tel:+1-123-456-7890
  • mailto:example@gmail.com

How to Organize Your Bookmarks - Useful Tips

In Bookmark Ninja, you can store your bookmarks either on the Dashboard or in the Catalog.

Dashboard:

  • The Dashboard consists of Tabs, which are collections of Categories organized in columns. Bookmarks are stored in Category boxes.
  • It is recommended to use the Dashboard for your most frequently used bookmarks and limit each Tab to a maximum of 50-150 bookmarks. This makes it easier to quickly find bookmarks visually.
  • It’s better to have fewer bookmarks per Tab and more Tabs overall. If you have many Tabs, you can use the Dynamic Tabs Bar feature.
  • The Dashboard can be considered an advanced Favorites collection.

Catalog:

  • The Catalog is for storing less frequently used bookmarks. It is a simple list of bookmarks accessible on the My Bookmarks page, similar to placing items in a large box and searching for them later when you need something.
  • It is recommended to use tags so you can find bookmarks more easily. When you run a search, both the titles of the bookmarks and the tags are searched. Additionally, you can use the Tag Quickfinder to filter bookmarks by their tags.

Organizing Tips:

  • When organizing your bookmarks, you can move them from the Dashboard to the Catalog and automatically add the Tab and Category names as tags using the Auto Tagging feature.
  • Bookmarks can also be moved from the Catalog to the Dashboard on the My Bookmarks page.

Why do bookmarks get duplicated after importing from Google Bookmarks? How to fix it?

The Google Bookmarks free online bookmarking service (it is different than the browser-based bookmarking in Google Chrome and should not be confused with Google Chrome) has been around since 2005. Google Bookmarks will be shut down on September 30, 2021.

Many users started to export their bookmarks from Google Bookmarks and after they imported the bookmarks into another bookmark manager or browser they realized that a lot of bookmarks got duplicated.

Unfortunately it’s a design flaw in Google Bookmarks. When you save a bookmark in Google Bookmarks with multiple tags, Google Bookmarks creates multiple copies of the bookmark: Let’s say you save a bookmark with 3 tags “tag1”, “tag2” and “tag3”. Instead of creating one bookmark with the 3 tags, Google Bookmarks creates 3 folders “tag1”, “tag2” and “tag3” and adds a copy of the bookmark to each of the folders. So when you export the bookmarks, the html bookmarks file contains duplicated bookmarks. And if you import this bookmarks file into another bookmark manager or browser you will get duplicated bookmarks.

Fortunately Bookmark Ninja has the Find/Delete Duplicates Tool that helps you get rid of the duplicated bookmarks quickly. You can either delete all the duplicates with just a few clicks or there is also an option for reviewing the duplicates manually and deciding which ones of the duplicated bookmarks to delete.

Why aren't there subcategories on the Dashboard? What if I need them?

I often get the question why there are no subcategories on the Dashboard. I think that the current layout (Tabs and Categories) makes the Dashboard UI very clean which makes it possible to visually quickly find the bookmarks. It's simple and clean. Just Tabs and Categories, no unlimited nested folders which can easily lead to a chaos if you are not careful. Adding an extra level (like subcategories) would sacrifice the clean UI and would have a negative impact on the performance, too.

If you still feel that you need a third level (or even more levels) to organize your bookmarks on the Dashboard then here are 4 workarounds and tips that will help you.

Option 1 - Use more Tabs

Let's say you have a "DIY" tab and you have the categories "Upholstery", "Electrical", "Painting", "Woodwork" on this tab, and you want to add subcategories to these categories. Instead of having one "DIY" tab, create multiple tabs like "DIY - Upholstery", "DIY - Electrical", "DIY - Painting" and "DIY - Woodwork". Then add the subcategories, that you originally wanted to add, as categories to the corresponding tabs.

Also it is recommended to set the same color for all your "DIY - ..." tab captions, so that they will be visually grouped on the tabs bar.

Don't worry about having many tabs on the Dashboard, with the Dynamic Tabs Bar feature you can have as many tabs as you want without having multiple rows of tab captions displayed on the screen.

Additinaly you can also make the tab captions smaller which will make it possible to fit more tab captions in a row.

Option 2 - Use more Categories

If you don't like the idea of adding more tabs (described in Option 1) then simply add the subcategories as standalone categories with the category titles "Upholstery - Subcategory1", "Upholstery - Subcategory2", "Upholstery - Subcategory3" etc. to the "DIY" tab.

It is recommended to set the same color for these category titles in order to visually group them.

If you have many categories on a tab, make sure to keep them collapsed, this will significantly improve the page loading speed.

Option 3 - Use fake subcategory labels

I got this idea from the users. This is kind of a "nasty" solution, but it seems to work.

(1) Add a bookmark to the category (click on the gear icon next to the category name, then select "Add Bookmark").

(2) Enter the subcategory name in the Title like "----------Subcategory Name----------".

(3) Enter "https://www.bookmarkninja.com" in the URL field (it is required to have a valid URL).

(4) Click on "Add".

(5) Change the background color of the "fake subcategory label" bookmark. It will look like a separator and you can drag and drop it to the desired position.

Option 4 - Use tags if you need multiple levels of categorization

If you want to organize your bookmarks with multiple levels of categorization then it is recommended to use tags. You can add as many tags as you want to the bookmarks and you can browse the bookmarks on the My Bookmarks page by selecting and deselecting tags.

Tip of the Day: How to open the Dashboard in a new browser tab?

If you click on the Dashboard button/link on the browser's bookmark bar, the Dashboard will open in the current browser tab. If you want to open it in a new browser tab then press Ctrl+Shift while you are clicking on it. The newly opened browser tab with the Dashboard will automatically get the focus and will be the active tab.

In Firefox you need to press just Ctrl without Shift.

On Mac use the Command button for Ctrl.

Tip of the day: Recommended Dashboard settings

If you have a large number of bookmarks on a tab the browser will need more time to render the page. What a "large number" is depends on the browser you use and what hardware configuration your computer has.

Here are some tips that will significantly speed up the Dashboard, both the loading time and the speed of the different bookmark operations.

#1 Turn off the bookmark drag and drop

By default bookmark drag and drop is turned on. To turn it off:
  1. Select "Settings" in the main menu
  2. Under "Dashboard settings" uncheck the "Enable bookmark drag and drop" checkbox
It is recommended to keep it turned off and to turn it on only for the time when you rearrange your bookmarks on the Dashboard.

#2 Keep the categories collapsed that have many bookmarks

The bookmarks of collapsed categories are not rendered when the Dashboard loads. The bookmarks of these categories will be rendered only when you expand a category. So keeping the categories collapsed that have many bookmarks will speed up the page loading.

#3 Turn off the favicons

We use a Google service to display the favicons of the bookmarked pages. If you have a large number of bookmarks on a tab, the loading of the favicons may impact the overall page loading speed.

To turn off the favicons:
  1. Select "Settings" in the main menu
  2. Under "Dashboard settings" uncheck the "Show favicons of bookmarks" checkbox
If favicons are turned on, after the Dashboard has been loaded you may see the "Waiting for www.google.com..." text in the browser's bottom status bar for awhile. This means that Google hasn't sent all of the favicons yet. This doesn't affect the operation of Bookmark Ninja, the Dashboard is already fully functional when the favicons are still being loaded.

Tip of the day: How to make Send Bookmarks via Email remember the email address?

This is supported by the browsers. Make sure Autofill is enabled in your browser. If it is enabled then next time when you want to send bookmarks to the same recipient just start typing the email address, the browser will autocomplete it, you don't need to enter the full email address again.

Most of the browsers have this setting turned on by default. If not, please check this link to find out how to enable Autofill in the different browsers.

Tip of the day: How to create a new Tab or Category during adding a bookmark?

On the Add Boookmark dialog there are two buttons with a "+" sign next to the Tab and Category selection drop-down lists. Simply click on these buttons to add a new Tab or Category on the fly while you are in the process of adding a bookmark. You don't need to launch Bookmark Ninja to add a new Tab or Category.
